Delhi Government To Pay Board Exam Fees Of NDMC, Delhi Cantonment Schools, Says Kejriwal

The Delhi government will pay the board exam fees of schools under the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Delhi Cantonment, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Monday.

He said the decision was taken at a cabinet meeting held on the same day.

The government will also hold extra classes to focus on teaching mathematics, he said.

The government had earlier said it will pay the board exam fees of all government school students, following a hike in the fees by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

“It was decided that the Delhi government will bear the board examination fees of all the students belonging to the Delhi government schools. Now, the Delhi government schools situated in the NDMC and Delhi Cantonment areas are also included under the purview of this decision,” Kejriwal, who was earlier a council member of the civic body, said at a press conference.

This announcement comes ahead of the Delhi polls to be held early next year.

Sharing details, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the cabinet approved a revised budget of Rs 61.32 crore in order to provide complete subsidy towards CBSE examination fee of students of Class 10 and 12 of government schools and it will include migration fees, practical fees and all other fees.

In addition to the schools of the Directorate of Education (DoE) and those aided by it, the benefit of this decision extend to taken over schools and Patrachar Vidhyalaya (open schools) of DoE also, said Sisodia, who is also Delhi’s Education Minister.

This will benefit about 3.6 lakh students, he said.

The cabinet also approved the same benefits to about 4,000 students of schools run by the NDMC, Delhi Cantonment Board (DCB) and Department of Social Welfare (DSW), he added.

Earlier, in September 2019, the Delhi Cabinet had approved waiver of examination fees charged by the CBSE from students of classes 10th and 12th and allocated the budget of Rs 57.20 crore.

“But Monday’s decision clarifies that all other costs like practical examinations fee and migration fee, etc too will be covered by the Delhi Government and the benefit will extend to students of taken over schools, Patrachar, NDMC, DCB and DSW also and the revised budget would be Rs 61.32 crore,” Sisodia said.

Kejriwal also said the government has analysed the results of all the subjects of Delhi government schools and found that students are scoring above 95 per cent in all subjects other than mathematics and science.

The results in these two subjects have gone down, with students scoring less than 76 per cent in mathematics.

“The Delhi government has decided to hold extra coaching classes in schools so that the results in the subjects in which the students are lagging behind can be brought on par with the scoring subjects.

“Extra coaching classes will also be held for students who have obtained compartment or have flunked in the board examinations,” he said.

In order to encourage students to become entrepreneurs rather than job-seekers, the government will give seed money of Rs 1,000 to promote entrepreneurial mindset amongst students, the chief minister said.

Students will carry out an entrepreneurship project either individually, or along with other fellow students under the guidance of their teachers while justifying and elaborating on the profit or the loss incurred on the project, he said.

“This initiative aims at building a thought process amongst the students on how to be entrepreneurs, rather than looking for jobs after their studies,” he added.

IFP-based Smart Classes And Panic Buttons Among New Technology At NDMC Schools

NEW DELHI: With more Interactive Flat Panel-based smart classes, Wi-Fi enabled classrooms and panic buttons, the New Delhi Municipal Council is looking to engage more technology in its primary, secondary, senior secondary and Navyug schools.

Last week the NDMC presented its budget for 2020-21 which was presented by newly appointed chairman Dharmendra.

Most major schemes and policies related to education introduced earlier got a further boost.

“Based on the feedback received from parents, proposal to introduce smart classes in primary sections of NDMC and Navyug schools last year was taken up. The process in this regard has already been initiated and the primary sections of NDMC and Navyug Schools will be equipped with the latest Interactive Flat Panel based Smart Classes in this academic session,” said an official.

The NDMC also will be introducing tablet-based Wi-Fi enabled classrooms this year which will be set up in each of secondary and senior secondary schools. For Wi-fi, fibre-based internet will be set up in all NDMC and Navyug schools.

Among other technology-related development in schools, NDMC plans to set four more Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs) through the fund received from NITI Ayog which is under process and likely to be completed by March 2020.

Palika Tinkering labs will be set up in remaining 18 secondary and senior secondary NDMC and Navyug Schools.

To further augment the security of the campuses, NDMC proposed to install panic buttons in all NDMC schools along with CCTV cameras in open areas.

NDMC Plans Better Disaster Readiness

NEW DELHI: New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has decided to come up with a comprehensive plan for disaster management in its area. The aim is to identify necessary measures to avoid loss of lives and property in case of any disaster.“We are eyeing a plan to understand the capacity to withstand disasters of all nature. A budget of Rs 10 crore for financial year 2020-21 has been approved for this purpose,” said NDMC chairman Dharmendra.The civic agency also aims to redevelop seven prominent roads, including KG Marg, Barakhamba Road, Sansad Marg, Janpath, Abdul Kalam Road, BKS Marg and Maulana Azad Road, under the Smart City plan. “They will have modern kiosks, street furniture, parking facilities, electric poles and seating plazas among other facilities,” said Dharmendra. The work will be taken up in 2020-21.NDMC also plans to provide seamless civic services to the citizens. “To entertain residents’ complaint we will develop artificial intelligence-based chatbot facility. From June 2020, it will enable citizens to get faster response to their queries 24X7,” said the chairman.NDMC is also working on a policy to finalise the rate charge at e- charging stations. “We aim to establish 100 fast e-charging stations this year,” said an NDMC official.The chairman has also proposed to provide financial assistance to RWAs and traders’ associations. “A sum of Rs 10 crore has been proposed for the year 2020-21 with an objective to provide scope for local initiatives and projects,” said the chairman. A digital gallery dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi is proposed to be established at Bapu Samaj Sewa Kendra at PK Road.E-office system will be integrated for maintaining file and records. “It will increase accountability of officials holding the files with them for long,” said Dharmendra. In the education sector, NDMC aims to install panic buttons in all schools in a couple of months. The civic agency also aims to reduce carbon footprints by ensuring “green waste disposal” methods.Multistorey complex to come up near Yashwant PlaceNew Delhi Municipal Council has prepared a plan to construct multistorey commercial complex at the vacant land between Akbar Bhawan and Satya Marg in Chanakyapuri area. The work at the complex, located next to Yashwant Place, will start soon.The complex will have four basements and 10 floors, and an amount of Rs 89 crore has been approved for it. The project was mentioned in the budget approved by the NDMC chairman on Friday for the next financial year. An official said the project was expected to complete in two years. “We aim to generate revenue by leasing out offices/commercial complexes. Rabindranath Tagore Had Said India’s History Is Not What Students Study: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said several important aspects of the country’s history were overlooked by historians who wrote about it after Independence without delving deeply into the subject. One of the key aspects of nation-building is to preserve the country’s heritage, he said.

“We want to show before the world our country’s heritage, wan to make India a hub of heritage tourism. Five iconic museums of the country will be developed to international standard, starting with the Indian Museum in Kolkata,” the prime minister said.

Modi dedicated to the nation four refurbished heritage buildings of the city – the Old Currency Building, the Belvedere House, the Metcalfe House and the Victoria Memorial Hall. “It is unfortunate that during the British rule and even after independence, the history that was written overlooked several important chapters,” he said.

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore in a writing in 1903 had said India’s history is not that what students study for examinations, Modi said while addressing a programme at the Old Currency Building.

“Some people came from outside, killed their own relatives, brothers for the sake of throne… is not our history. This was said by Gurudev himself. He had said in this history, it is not mentioned what the people of the country was doing. Didn’t they have any existence?” he said.

The country’s history, written during the Colonial rule and after Independence, has ignored several major events, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday, while stressing on the importance of awakening national conscience in the “age of violence”.

Speaking at an event in Kolkata, the PM said: “It is very unfortunate that several important events were ignored when the country’s history was being written both during the British rule and after the Independence.”

Quoting Rabindranath Tagore, he said, “India’s history is not what we remember and write for examinations. We have seen son killing father and siblings fighting against each other. This is not India’s history.” In this context, he wondered what the indigenous people of India were doing then. “It seems that they did not exist,” the prime minister said.

Modi, quoting Tagore again, said whenever a difficult time like a storm comes, it is needed to stand up and face it. “...In this age of violence, it is needed to awaken national conscience. It is only from this that our culture, history and philosophy have emerged,” he added.

Highlighting that the people of the country have brought changes not with the help of military power, but through movements. “Politics and military power are short-lived. But the power of art, culture and history is permanent”, he said.

Meanwhile, addressing the event on the first day of his two-day visit to the state, the PM dedicated four refurbished heritage buildings here -- Old Currency Building, the Belvedere House, the Metcalfe House and the Victoria Memorial Hall -- to the nation.

“Out of the five galleries in Victoria Memorial, two are closed for a long period. This is not right. Efforts are going on to open them. The revolutionary contribution of Bengal during the freedom struggle should be showcased in the third gallery. Leaders including Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Aurobindo Ghose and Khudiram Bose should find space,” he added.

“Tradition and tourism have a direct link with our culture. To put India on the forefront, we will promote heritage tourism which also has the scope for employment generation...,” he said.

“An Indian Institute of Heritage will also be set up with a deemed university status,” he added.

In the evening, Modi shared the dais with Banerjee when he unveiled the dynamic illumination with synchronised light and sound system of Rabindra Setu (Howrah Bridge). The PM took a boat ride to reach Belur Math where he will spend the night.

On Sunday, Modi is scheduled to take part in rituals marking the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. After that, he will then attend the 150th-anniversary celebration of the Kolkata Port before flying back to Delhi.
