Fabric's Affordable Life Insurance Is Ideal For Families With Young Children, But Anyone Can Benefit After the birth of my first son, my entire perspective towards money changed

After the birth of my first son, my entire perspective towards money changed. I was struck by the realization that for the next 20 years, another life would be depending on my income for survival.
Honestly, that thought was a bit frightening, and I immediately began shopping for life insurance. My story isn't that unusual. Many people don't start seriously thinking about life insurance until they have kids.
Fabric, a digital life insurance company, seems to get that and has tailored its life insurance policies and other services to appeal specifically to families. Let's take a closer look at what the company has to offer.
Fabric life insurance pricing and terms
Fabric's main life insurance product is called Fabric Premium, but it also offers an accidental death coverage policy called Fabric Instant. All Fabric life insurance policies are backed by Vantis Life, which is currently rated A+ for financial strength by A.M. Best.
Fabric life insurance term length and coverage amounts
One of the things that sets Fabric apart is the term lengths that it offers on its insurance policies.
Many life insurers offer policies that will cover you for 30 years or longer. But, remember, Fabric is focused on covering you while you have kids in the home. So, for now, the longest term Fabric offers is 20 years.
In most states, Fabric offers 10- and 15-year policies as well, for those who want shorter terms.
Get a life insurance quote from Fabric today and protect your family's future »
As far as coverage options go, you can choose from $100,000 to $1 million. Currently, Fabric only offers term life insurance policies, but they are convertible to whole life policies if you want that flexibility.
Fabric life insurance pricing
The specific prices that you're quoted will depend on your health, age, and family medical background.
But in my experience, Fabric's quotes are very competitive. For example, here are a few actual quotes I received from Fabric for a 20-year policy:

  • $300,000 in coverage: $18.20 monthly premium
  • $500,000 in coverage: $23.39 monthly premium
  • $1 million in coverage: $39.50 monthly premium
  • Fabric
Depending on your situation, Fabric may offer you slightly higher or lower rates than what I received. But I do believe that the company strives to offer affordable policies to its customers.
Extra perks to help you protect your family
In addition to its life insurance product, Fabric offers a couple of extra services that families will appreciate.
    Fabric Wills
Fabric Wills is a service that you can use to create your last will and testament for free. A will not only allows you to designate who should inherit your estate, but it's also where you can appoint a guardian for your child.
For this reason, creating your will is very important if you have kids. And Fabric says you can create yours in five minutes on its site.
    Fabric Fabric Vault
Fabric Vault is a financial security product that is built into the Fabric app. With Fabric Vault, you can share your financial account information (like your bank, 401(k), or IRA) with your spouse.
You can store your will in your Fabric Vault as well. Think of it like a virtual bank safety deposit box. And Fabric Vault takes security seriously, using 256-bit encryption to protect your data.
    Quick application process
It takes less than one minute to get a quote from Fabric. The site asks for just five pieces of information: your age, your gender, your state of residence, your history with tobacco use (if any), and your health.
If you like what you see, you can continue with the full application, which asks a lot of questions about your health.
But it's for a good reason. If everything checks out and no flags are raised, you may be able to receive full underwriting approval immediately. That means you may be able to get medically underwritten life insurance coverage without a medical exam.
If you aren't able to receive immediate approval, one of Fabric's underwriters will reach out and may ask for more information. In some cases, you may still need to undergo a medical exam (but at no cost to you).
Get immediate coverage with Fabric Instant
Even if you aren't able to receive instant approval for a Fabric Premium policy, you can get Fabric Instant coverage within two minutes if you're between ages 25 and 50.
With a Fabric Instant life insurance policy, accidental deaths, like car crashes, fire, and murder, are covered. That could provide peace of mind until you're able to get approval for a Fabric Premium plan, which would also covers deaths caused by illness.
Fabric Life is a good product, but you'll still want to shop around
One of Fabric's strengths lies in its simplicity. But that could also be one of its weaknesses.
If you're looking for a 30-year policy, a whole life policy, or a ton of optional riders, Fabric isn't going to be the right insurer for you.
But Fabric is a strong choice for anyone who's looking to buy term life insurance with a term length of 20 years or less. It offers a streamlined application process, competitive rates, and useful companion products.
Just be sure to compare your Fabric life insurance quotes with at least two other insurers. Or use an insurance marketplace, like Policygenius or Quotacy, to see quotes from multiple insurers at the same time.

PUBG Exec Clarifies Objection To Fortnite Battle Royale: 'it's Not About The Idea Itself, It's About Epic Games'

As we reported early on Friday, the release of Fortnite Battle Royale, a 100-player last-man standing game mode for Epic Games base-building FPS, drew criticism from PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' development team, specifically Bluehole VP and executive producer Changhan Kim. Bluehole's press release expressed concern that Fortnite "may be replicating the experience for which PUBG is known" and that Bluehole was contemplating "further action."
Bluehole contacted PC Gamer Friday evening to clarify its objection to Fortnite Battle Royale and explain in greater detail some of the statements made in the press release. I spoke with C.H. Kim tonight over Skype (he was in Tokyo), with marketing and events manager Sammie Kang providing translation and giving the final two responses.
We use Unreal Engine to develop PUBG, and we pay a large amount of royalties based on the size of our success to Epic Games
C.H. Kim, VP and executive producer
C.H. Kim: So the first thing that I'd like to clarify is that this is not about the battle royale game mode itself. There were other BR gamemodes earlier this year that were released, like last man standing or GTA 5's battle royale game mode, and we never raised an issue, and I think it's great that there's more competition and everyone should be able to create their own battle royale game mode, and it's not about the idea itself, it's about Epic Games, and that wasn't really clear [in the press release].
PC Gamer: So it's not the mode you guys have an issue with. From your statement or your press release earlier today, it said that there were similarities in the UI, and the other things mentioned were the gameplay and structural replication in the battle royale mode. Can you specify exactly, if you're not objecting to a battle royale mode in another game, then what do you mean by concerns about gameplay?
There are a lot of different issues but everyone else that released a battle royale game mode made their own thing, but it was Epic Games that made this game that is similar to us that has similar elements, and that's the concern, that it was Epic Games.
We use Unreal Engine to develop PUBG, and we pay a large amount of royalties based on the size of our success to Epic Games, and Epic Games always promoted their licensing models [saying] "We want to support the success indie developers", and [Bluehole is] this indie developer that has been the most successful one using the Unreal Engine this year, and that's the problem that I see.
So if, say, you had no real connection with Epic through the Unreal Engine, say you used another engine, or this battle royale mode was from some other company you don't have that connection with, it wouldn't be an issue? It's specifically because it's Epic and you licensed their engine, is that correct?
So, battle royale is just about last man standing, it's a simple game mode, and we're not claiming any kind of ownership over the game mode or genre itself, it's not for us to even comment. There were a lot of copycats in China and [in that] industry there is a lot of battle royale games that look exactly [the] same as ours, so we will definitely look into similarities if there are different products that are very similar to our game, but even before we actually looked deeper into how similar [Fortnite Battle Royale] is, we wanted to raise an issue because this is from Epic Games. We could be the biggest indie success story that they have and there will be other indie developers that aspire to succeed like us using Unreal Engine, and they would be concerned, right? So we just wanted to raise an issue and let people know that it can be a problem.
we're starting to have concerns that they're going to develop new features or improve something in the engine to support that battle royale gameplay, and then use it for their own game mode.
    C.H. Kim
And in terms of a resolution you'd be satisfied with, what are you hoping or thinking that Epic could do with Fortnite's battle royale mode that would remove the objections you have?
Well, we would have to specifically talk about the details with Epic Games but we haven't been connected to their headquarters yet. So what I want to explain here is that PUBG might have really simple battle royale rules and systems, but we see that as Brendan's own idea and that game mode in PUBG belongs to Brendan. You know that Daybreak Games actually licensed this idea and worked with him to develop their game mode and [Bluehole] did license his idea as well. Not only [did we bring] him to Korea to hire him as the creative director, we licensed his idea to develop PUBG.
So we're not just taking someone else's idea. Bluehole's stance is that we respect and value the indie developer or modder's idea and we actually licensed it.
So what I think I'm hearing is you would like Epic to license their battle royale from you? Is that what I'm hearing?
What I think is, they should have at least came to us before making it and had a discussion with us.
So, there's another issue. We're going to get some technical support [from Epic], and we're going to work with them to make sure Unreal Engine better supports battle royale gameplay which requires 100 people in one session, and now we're starting to have concerns that they're going to develop new features or improve something in the engine to support that battle royale gameplay, and then use it for their own game mode.
But not give [the improvements] to you, even though you've licensed the engine, is that what you're saying? They'll develop technology that improves their battle royale but is restricted from you?
We could be afraid when we make new features in the engine by modifying it internally, that is not already available and public, that feature could be leaked, or other things could happen.
Prior to the press release you sent out about this issue, had you reached out to Epic through different channels?
So we didn't have any real discussions [with Epic] and we just found out through articles from the media and then it took us a long time to figure out what was going on because we found this out through media, and it took us a long time, and [Epic was] being really aggressive about making this into a standalone game that will be released on different platforms, and we thought we need to straighten things out here and then clarify some things.
It was just a bit surprising and disappointing to see our business partner using our name officially to promote the game mode
    C.H. Kim
What is your next step? You're obviously hoping to get in contact with Epic at some point and start discussing your options.
So, yes, of course we want to start a discussion and we reached out to Epic Korea, and they have reached out to their headquarters based in the US, but we didn't get any response, and that might be because it's the weekend right now.
So, we just want to emphasize this only a problem because Epic Games is the company that makes the engine we use and we pay a large amount of royalties to them. And we had this business relationship and we had trust that we would be getting continued support, and we were looking forward to working more closely with them to get technical support, maybe develop new features. But our name was used to officially promote their game without our knowledge. There was no discussion. It was just a bit surprising and disappointing to see our business partner using our name officially to promote the game mode that is pretty similar to us and there was misunderstanding in the community that we're officially involved in the project.
When they used your name, was that in official promotional materials?
Sammie Kang: It was in their promotional video that was posted on Twitter and they would openly mention that they were fans of PUBG, we wanted to make this battle royale game mode, and that kind of gave the impression that we were officially involved in this.
So they were giving the impression that you guys were on board and were a part of this, and in no way were you.
Sammie Kang: Right, and there were players like, "Oh it's cool, now we get to play PUBG in Fortnite", and there was nothing we could do about it, because it was depicted that we were officially involved.

Meghan Markle's Trainer Reveals 6 Tips For Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

Meghan Markle's Trainer Reveals 6 Tips For Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain.

    Don't lie to yourself.
Don't tell yourself "I'll work out tomorrow" unless you actually have a plan to do just that. Crystal Cox/Business Insider
Lagree said one of the biggest problems is that people aren't realistic or honest with themselves about their holiday plans. It's easy to say you'll work out tomorrow, but facing a snowy, possibly hungover, trek to the gym after Thanksgiving is daunting.
"People live under false promise of 'I will do it tomorrow,' but that never happens," Lagree said. "That's why unfortunately every year, there's an accumulation of weight gain. A lot of people still haven't lost the weight they gained last year."
But going in with clear goals and a plan for sticking with them can prevent that.
Plan to eat something before the big feast.
Eating a healthy snack or light meal before the big meal can assure you won't arrive famished and overdo it. Robynmac/iStock
Don't hold off on eating before the holiday meal because you plan to "save" all your calories for one sitting, Lagree said. That will only make you hungrier, and more likely to overdo it once the meal is finally served.
Instead, have a healthy, filling meal before you leave for the celebration. Something less calorie-dense but with a lot of volume and nutrition is ideal, Lagree said. Leafy greens and veggies or complex carbs like whole-grains could work.
    Drink water between servings.

With buffet-style gatherings, it can be easy to overdo it, but plan to stick to reasonable portions.
Drinking plenty of water can help give your body a break to assess how full you really are before you go back for another serving, Lagree said.
    Enjoy the meal.

Don't stress if you spend Thanksgiving enjoying a hearty meal with family or friends.
Lagree said that for most people with healthy lifestyle, one big day of partying or eating won't cause significant issues.
"If it's a one-time thing, that's OK. Nothing bad is going to happen; your body will bounce back," he said. "The problem is the reptative habit."
Exercise daily, even if it's just a few minutes at home.
Pick five exercises and do each for a minute. Undrey/Shutterstock
On a cold winter day, especially after a big meal, it can be tempting to skip the snowy trek to the gym in favor of cozying up indoors. But Lagree said it's still possible to get in a solid workout, even without equipment or much time.
He recommended slow, isometric workouts — exercises that hold tension through the movement — like lunges, wall sits, planks, tricep dips, and crunches.
Pick five and do each for a minute, in any order. "Move so slow you can feel gravity pulling your body to the floor, feel your body fighting gravity," Lagree said.
For an added challenge, add a "pulse" movement to static holds. In a squat, for instance, hold the position, then very slowly move up and down a tiny amount, still maintaining a low squat. For plank, lower into a partial push-up position and back into plank.
"You don't have to do it for hours," Lagree said. "Just a few seconds will get your heart rate up."
Don't rely on quick fixes if you do fall out of your healthy habits.

The last mistake people make regarding post-holiday fitness is expecting to make huge changes overnight by falling for social media promises or slick marketing campaigns, Lagree said.
"If the promise seems really far-fetched, it probably is," he said.
He recommended giving yourself the same amount of time to get back in shape as you spent getting out of shape. For instance, if you gain a few pounds during a month of holiday celebrations, a full month of consistent exercise and healthy eating is a realistic goal to burn it off.
If it's been a little longer since you've worked out, like a months or even a few years, expect is to take a proportionately longer amount of time to reach your fitness goals.
"You want to go slow, do things in moderation, don't try anything weird, so you don't hurt yourself," Lagree said. "There's no magic pill, it's just hard work, discipline, and consistency. The slow and steady approach is best."

If you're going to fall in front of an audience at least make it charming – and preferably with some rhythm.
Ariana Grande was captured on video taking a tumble onstage during a concert in Tampa, Florida, on Sunday.
Grande was walking onstage in thigh high boots when she tripped and lost her balance, landing on her knees. The "7 Rings" artist was caught by a backup dancer who picked her up and placed her safely back on the platform she was walking on and Grande continued on with her performance.
A fan shared the video of the stumble to Twitter and noted how Grande kept it in time with the song.
"SHE FELL ON BEAT I HAVE TEARS," wrote the Twitter user.
Grande responded saying: "oh my. At least i still made the button. I’m crying. Things were going too well."
Early Monday morning, Grande had another surprise for fans: A peek at her natural curls, as seen in her black and white Instagram Story video. "The most hair," she wrote in tiny font.
Grande is back in action just a week after announcing she would be canceling a show at Rupp Arena in Kentucky on Nov. 17 due to illness.
She did so after warning her fans the night before that she was "very sick" with a sinus infection and may be forced to cancel upcoming shows on her world tour.
"Ariana revealed to fans on social media that she was struggling to get better quickly, but she is simply not well enough to perform tonight," read a tweet from the arena's official account, adding that ticket holders would be refunded.

How To Win Holiday Season Marketing With Relevance And Timing.

How To Win Holiday Season Marketing With Relevance And Timing.

There’s nothing like a classic holiday scene. Snow dusts the ground, smoke climbs from the chimney and Hershey’s Kisses “Christmas Bells” ads ring out from the TV.
    CONSTELLATION BRANDS, INC.
Consumers endure nonstop advertising, so most marketing messages amount to mere background noise. Per Kantar's research, 89% of U.S. Consumers feel indifferent at best about advertising, and even that number seems like an understatement.
Regardless, the holiday season brings in big business for retailers. According to Deloitte's forecast, holiday sales will increase by up to 5% this year, racking up more than $1.1 trillion.
If you're a retail marketer, you may plan on upping your media buys to ensure 2019’s last quarter is a good one. If so, you’ll be fighting for consumer attention with almost every other brand, which means your marketing had better strike the right holiday sentiment.
Marketing timing is everything -- and it is tricky
The first holiday marketing trick is timing. Multiple major shopping days run through the holiday season, and ads often start before Halloween.
Etsy and eBay commenced their promotional merriment even earlier this year, as both launched holiday marketing in September. The online auction site quipped about “Christmas Creep” -- the industry term for holiday ads that announce themselves earlier every year — but eBay was simply being clever with its anti-holiday-sales holiday campaign. Both e-commerce brands vied for consumer attention before the shopping craze could start in earnest.

Whether snow has already fallen or not, keep in mind that it's not too late. You still have plenty of chances to win customers over, but you must focus on proper timing and relevance to battle advertising oversaturation. According to Andrew Browne, owner of social media marketing firm Browne Box Creative, sellers should consider branching out beyond typical forms of marketing communication. Consider, for instance, the meme.
While bad advertising is protracted and unequivocal, good memes are pithy and nuanced; they strike a culturally relevant chord. Fit those elements into an ad, and you will draw attention — but it’s easier said than done. “The sweet spot between overwhelming an audience and being funny is very small,” says Browne.
You can find success with your holiday marketing campaigns, but it requires a thoughtful strategy and a witticism or two. Here are three tips to help you develop your plan:
    1. Find your festive niche.
You can’t reign over the entire holiday season, nor should you try to. Instead, select one holiday where you can stake a claim, whether that’s Halloween, Flag Day, Green Monday or something else. Use that holiday to guide your creative, and start your campaign in the weeks leading up to it to build anticipation.
When Proximo Spirits partnered with Generator Media + Analytics to introduce Kraken, a black spiced rum named after a legendary sea monster, the partners chose Halloween for the brand launch. Citing “a strong creative alignment for a dark brand during a dark holiday,” they negotiated with FX cable network to make Kraken a sponsor of “American Horror Story: Coven” and built buzz with out-of-home marketing in key markets. Over Halloween week, year-over-year sales volume rose by 29%, and social media engagement skyrocketed.

    2. Use behavioral data to find your audience.
Seasonality drives relevance, but to make an emotional connection with your target audience, your marketing needs to be personalized in a way that will appeal to the prospective buyer. Just as people outside the U.S. Wouldn’t care to buy fireworks for July 4th, not everyone stocks up on beer for the Super Bowl, buys a Christmas tree in December or makes a turkey on Thanksgiving.
You probably don’t have access to data that tells you individual customer interests with regard to each holiday; data providers, however, can develop a targeted audience list based on individual consumer interests and spending habits. This will allow you to design customer creative that speaks to a wide range of potential customers, ensuring optimal impact. For example, a major jeweler partnered with Epsilon, a data provider, to target jewelry buyers specifically around Valentine’s Day so its ads would be directed at qualified leads.
    3. Accommodate each generation.
Similar to individual differences in the way people celebrate and prepare for specific holidays, there are also critical generational variances that affect the way consumers approach this season.
Any brands targeting Generation Z consumers will need to create highly individualized experiences with a focus on mobile. These customers spend money more frequently than other generations on tech disruptors like iTunes, Netflix and Uber. Baby Boomers, however, don’t shop with as much frequency as other generations, but when they do, they spend more money. They typically prefer to shop in-store, though Boomers who are parents actually shop online more than those who aren’t parents. With the right data, you can develop a campaign based on individual preferences that differentiate members of the same generation.
Retailers stand to benefit substantially from the holiday shopping season, so act on your holiday marketing strategy early. With relevance and the right timing, you’ll get a chance to make a little holiday magic.

This Revolutionary Technology Accurately Detects 13 Types Of Cancer Using Single Drop Of Blood

This Revolutionary Technology Accurately Detects 13 Types Of Cancer Using Single Drop Of Blood.

Renowned Japanese enterprise Toshiba Corp. Has unveiled its new technology that is capable of detecting 13 different types of cancer accurately using just a drop of blood.
The new diagnostic technology which has 99% accuracy is made in collaboration with the National Cancer Center Research Institute and Tokyo Medical University. It is expected that this new device will reach the masses in the near future once it successfully passes clinical trials in 2020.
The device is designed in such a way that it examines the type and the concentration of microRNA (miRNA) molecules that the cancer cells secrete in the blood. Other companies like Toray Industries Inc. Have already designed similar devices that can detect cancer using miRNA molecules from a patient’s blood sample.
"Compared to other companies' methods, we have an edge in the degree of accuracy in cancer detection, the time required for detection and the cost,” Japantimes quoted Koji Hashimoto, Chief Research Scientist at Toshiba's Frontier Research Laboratory.
Along with digital solutions that use artificial intelligence (AI), the Japanese firm has positioned medical businesses like cell diagnosis and genome analysis in its upcoming business strategies.
The new device is capable of detecting the following cancers:
  • Gastric cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Bowel cancer
  • Bladder cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Biliary tract cancer
  • Sarcoma
  • Glioma
  • Alongside being revolutionary, prompt and accurate in detecting cancer, it is expected that the device would also be affordable. The chip and the small device which will be used to conduct cancer detection within a couple of hours are expected to cost less than 20,000 yen ($180).
With such incredible accuracy, affordability, speed, and being able to detect so many kinds of cancer, this device might soon be fundamental in the offices of doctors and oncologists throughout the world.
However, this isn’t the first time such a method has been discovered to detect cancer promptly and accurately. The experts at the University of Queensland have previously developed a universal cancer test which used a simple color-changing fluid to detect malignant cells in the body, within just ten minutes.

Tear Gas Is Especially Harmful To Children-Here's Why.

Tear Gas Is Especially Harmful To Children-Here's Why.

The events this week in Tijuana at the U.S.-Mexican border have been stunning.
Not only did we witness the use of tear gas on adult immigrants from Central America who were seeking asylum in the U.S., but on their children as well.
It’s important to understand what tear gas actually is, and how it can have an even more pronounced effect on children compared to adults.
“The use of tear gas on children—including infants and toddlers in diapers—goes against evidence-based recommendations, and threatens their short and long-term health,” said Colleen Craft, MD, FAAP, President of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in a press release yesterday.
“ . A child's smaller size, more frequent number of breaths per minute and limited cardiovascular stress response compared to adults magnifies the harm of agents such as tear gas,” she added.
    Tear Gas 101:
So let’s explore what tear gas actually is, and dispel some myths surrounding its constituents and effects.
To begin with, .  It is released from canisters as an aerosol, with irritants that incapacitate you by causing pain and burning to the eyes, mucous membranes, throat, lungs, and skin.
In fact, tear gas should actually be thought of as a type of nerve agent that doesn’t just irritate cells, but activates specific pain receptors, (TRPV1, TRPA1) leading to the intense and burning pain on all affected surfaces and membranes.
In the eye, it leads to intense tear production and burning, along with exaggerated muscle cramping (blepharospasm) in the eyelid that leads to eye closure. In people with asthma, this can produce intense bronchospasm and airway closure, along with an overflow of mucous production that can lead to suffocation or the feeling of literally “drowning in your secretions”. In effect, tear gas leads to a chemical burn to the airways, skin, eyes, and all mucous membranes.
There are a number of types of tear gas, but (chlorobenzylidenemalononitrile). The next most common type is CN (chloroacetophenone).
Other types include PS (chloropicrin), which may also function as a fumigant, CA (bromobenzylcyanide), CR (dibenzoxazepine), as well as combinations of these agents.
The degree to which you are affected is determined by the amount, location (indoors or outdoors), and duration of the exposure. And how quickly you are decontaminated–eyes flushed, clothing removed, and skin scrubbed with cleaning agents--ultimately influences the duration of your symptoms.
    The Immediate Effects
Effects of the irritants begin typically begin within seconds, and can last up to an hour.
Effects to the eye include excessive tearing (lacrimation), blurred vision, redness, and intense eye burning. Nasal effects include burning, nasal mucosal swelling, and a runny nose. You may experience difficulty swallowing, drooling, and severe burning inside your mouth and on your tongue. Effects on your lungs include wheezing, coughing, choking sensation, and difficulty catching your breath.
The net effect of this, especially in asthmatics, can mean an asthma exacerbation (attack) which can lead to respiratory failure and death. But a severe upper airway exposure and resulting burn can potentially lead to dangerous swelling in the upper airway, asphyxiation and even death.
So, if you don’t experience such devastating airway or respiratory effects, your skin feels like it’s on fire, and actual burns and blister formation may result. If this isn’t enough, add nausea and vomiting. You get it—not a pretty picture.
    Potential Long Term Effects
A significant exposure—especially indoors, for a long enough period of time--can lead to serious eye effects including cataracts, glaucoma, and even blindness.
The good news is that if your symptoms quickly resolve after you undergo decontamination, the potential for long term effects, especially eye-related, are “unlikely to occur”, according to the CDC.
But, the effects of these agents, especially to the lungs and heart, are much more pronounced in children. Because tear gas is heavier than air, it remains in higher concentrations closer to the ground, consequently affecting children to a greater degree because they are shorter. Children also get a greater dose due to higher concentrations that occur closer to the ground, placing them at greater risk for lung injury.
This means that the amount of agent required to produce effects in children is significantly lower compared with adults, as Dr. Kraft emphasized in her recent press release.
How To Protect Yourself if Exposed
If you are exposed to tear gas, it’s important to get to fresh air, evacuate the affected area as soon as possible, and reach the highest ground possible. This is because dense vapor clouds of tear gas are heavier than air as explained above, and therefore tend to stay close to the ground. If you were exposed indoors, it’s vital to get outdoors as soon as you can.
Remove soiled clothes as soon as possible, followed by vigorous cleaning of your entire body with soap and water.  Any clothing that needs to be pulled over the head, like a shirt or sweater, should be cut off, in order to eliminate any exposure to your eyes and mouth. Wearing rubber gloves is advised and all contaminated clothes should be placed in a plastic bag.  Contact lens should removed with clean gloves, and eyeglasses cleaned with soap and water.
Difficulty breathing after exposure should be treated with oxygen, bronchodilators, and steroids on scene if possible, followed by transport to the emergency department. Chemical burns to the skin may require debridement, fluid resuscitation based on extent, and application of medicated dressings.
No antidote exists for exposure to tear gas, but wearing a gas mask is ideal to protect yourself if you anticipate the use of it.
That said, there are a number of homemade recipes touted to help ease symptoms after exposure. One includes use of lemon juice, or antacids such as Maalox in water. None of these approaches has actually been tested in a clinical fashion. That said, water remains the most available and effective solvent for irrigation in the setting of any type of ocular burn.
An agent known as Diphoterine demonstrated promise in preventing as well as treating CS exposure in 5 members of the French military in a small study from 2002, but is not widely available.
What’s clear is this: . Children are at significantly higher risk for poor outcomes, as well as those with chronic lung disease, hypersensitivity syndromes, and older persons with heart and kidney disease.
